Building Materials

Over the years, we've witnessed so many innovations in the construction industry as regards building materials. From the era of the long-lasting concrete for building different structures to the creation of steel used for high-rise buildings and skyscrapers alike. Most of the buildings we see today which we describe as superior architectural exploits are results of the innovations of building materials. Old building materials being used in construction are now being replaced with new ones. While some of these materials are already making waves in the construction industry, others are still very new but have the potential to revolutionize construction. In the next section, we will be considering 8 of these materials that have the potential to revolutionize construction.

Building Materials That Will Revolutionize Construction

1. Countertops

The countertop industry has experienced a significant leap over the last few decades. In the 70s, the countertop was merely a work surface, like the chopping board or the boards where kids get to do their school assignments. But presently, countertops are a major trend and basic design elements that make up the artistic perspective of every home.

2. Roofing and Siding

Roofing and siding keep evolving; there seems to be regular innovation with regards to roof designs. Now, roofing and siding have become a part of the esthetic trait of every structure. Today, there are different designs of roofs in the market and these designs are expected to revolutionize construction.

3. Windows

Windows are not new in construction; they've been used over the years. Today, there are a variety of designs of windows. In manufacturing these windows, lots of consideration is been put into place. As a result, windows have greatly improved, both in beauty and in its functions (ventilation, daylighting, protection against the weather, and so on).

4. Fence

Fences are structures solely designed to enclose a particular area, typically outdoors. Generally, they are constructed from pillar to pillar and are constructed from posts that are connected by wire, boards, nets, or rails. A fence is different from a wall in that walls have solid foundations across the whole length.

It is common knowledge that a fence serves as a form of boundary and also a sign of ownership of a particular structure or location. Fences also give privacy and help to protect against noise. Fences are one of the building materials that has and continues to revolutionize construction.

5. Cabinets

Before now, the close drawer-hinge style of a cabinet was seen in almost every home. This is not the case anymore, as the soft-close hinge cabinet has taken over. This new style of cabinet has advantages which include: slamming cabinet doors is impossible, no pinched fingers, and contents stay in place. Kitchens today are larger and can have many cabinets. Some kitchens can contain as many as fifty drawers and cabinet doors. The design of cabinets keeps improving to meet the needs of users and these new designs must be considered in the construction of a home.

6. Exotic Decking and Wood Products

Decking in construction has evolved over the years. Lots of innovations in decking are seen in recent years. One of the major factors that have contributed to the improvement of decks in recent years is the use of exotic hardwoods. Exotic hardwoods such as “Ipe” or “Mukulungu” are ideally suited for residential or commercial applications, such as decking. These exotic hardwoods have a rich color, fine texture, and are also durable. As a result of their properties, they are been used in decking and other outdoor applications. The use of these exotic hardwoods is decking has come to stay; the construction industry has already embraced it.

7. Lumber

Lumber (also called timber), is a type of wood already processed into planks and beams, a stage in the wood production process. Lumber has several uses but is mainly used for structural purposes. There are two major types of lumber - it could be supplied surfaced on one or more of its faces or it could be supplied rough-sawn. Other than pulpwood, the raw material for furniture making or other related items that needs extra cutting and shaping is rough lumber. Lumber is mainly available in hardwoods; but it can also be available in softwoods, such as red pine and white pine. Over the years, lumber has been used in the construction of houses, carts, and other items that are used daily. It is a widely traded commodity that is used in so many industrial applications. Primarily, lumber is used by the construction industry as a raw material for building homes.

8. Doors and Moldings

Often, the least considered part in a design or aesthetic part of a building or structure is the door. The design of doors both in appearance and in function is improving greatly. These new designs of doors can be slotted in with simplicity to match a building wall.

In time past, moldings only serve as frames that house doors and windows alike. But now, they are one of the most regular components of interior designs. Doors and moldings are one of the building materials expected to revolutionize construction.

Conclusion

There you have it – the 8 new building materials that are expected to revolutionize construction. Some of the materials mentioned above are not necessarily new, but with innovations and improvements in their designs, they are expected to change the dynamics of the construction industry.
